Commuters were being diverted this morning (Wednesday, September 23) after a collision between a lorry and a car on the A41 Whitchurch Road near Waverton on the outskirts of Chester.

Cheshire Police reported at 6.25am that the road close to the Black Dog was blocked. Motorists were advised to avoid the area although the road has now been cleared and is returning to normal.

A fire service spokesman confirmed the collision was between an articulated lorry, driven by a Latvian national, and a Ford Fiesta carrying a man and wife from Poland.

The couple were initially trapped but were released by firefighters.

Following the collision, the lorry was left bridging both sides of the road, leading to the blockage. Recovery vehicles made their way to the scene to clear the road.

The male driver was extricated from the wreckage on a spinal board but was conscious and communicating with his daughter on a mobile phone.

Both man and wife were taken by ambulance to the Countess of Chester Hospital.

The lorry driver, who was believed to have just set off from a nearby lay-by when the accident occurred, was not harmed.

Diversions had been put in place either side of the incident – at the Sainsbury’s roundabout in Boughton and at the junction of the A41 and the A534 at the Broxton roundabout.
